Kultura Wen (文)

What is Kultura Wen?

Wen (æ–‡) means language and literature in Chinese. The Chinese character æ–‡ is still used in Japanese and in some traditional Korean and Vietnamese contexts. Historically, the character can also serve as a sign that unites many Asian countries through a shared writing system, even though the languages are spoken differently.

æ–‡ means language, literature, writing, and culture in multiple Asian languages. Classical Chinese characters have been used as a universal written language in Asia for over 3,000 years, thus this character is deeply rooted in shared culture.

We still write the characters in China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. We can also still see them in the traditional temples and palaces of Korea and Vietnam. 文 is pronounced as wen in Chinese, 문 (mun) in Korean, もん (mon) in Japanese, and văn in Vietnamese.

In its earliest hieroglyphical origin, æ–‡ depicted a human opening their arms to reveal tattoo writings on the chest.

Today, we use æ–‡ to share our cultures and the writings of our daily humanity.

Kultura Wen references the cultural heritage of our creative writing Editor, 张涟 (Lian Zhang), who is a native Chinese speaker.
